First Quad Continues After Beating Windsor Boys ‘B’

The first Malvern Quad, consisting of Carter Lindborg, Matt McManus, Mike Rawlings and Robin Prendes from Miami Rowing Club, beat the Windsor Boys' School 'B' boat by three and one-quarter lengths to continue through to the next round of the Henley Royal Regatta’s Fawley Challenge Cup. They will race what is considered the top quad over in England, Windsor Boys’ School ‘A’, in the next round of racing tomorrow.

The second Malvern Quad, consisting of Matt Benedetto, Sean Stewart, Mark Borgerson, and Mike Bohs, lost to Maritime Boat Club by one-half of a length in their race earlier today. “The boys rowed Maritime down until the end of the race and managed to get within half a length of them by the finish. It was a real gutsy, heart-felt race,” said head coach Craig Hoffman.

Good luck to the first Malvern Quad in their race tomorrow, they should be up to the challenge.

Second Quad Continues After First Round at Henley

Earlier today, the second Malvern Quad, consisting of Matt Benedetto, Sean Stewart, Mark Borgerson, and Mike Bohs, qualified after winning their first round race at the Henley Royal Regatta. They beat KRS Sport Gent from Belgium by two and one-quarter boat lengths. Malvern was even with or behind KRS Sport Gent until the last 400 meters, when they steamed ahead for the win. “The guys have a lot of heart; they just wouldn’t quit,” said head coach Craig Hoffman. Conditions today were horrible, with head winds, cross winds, a bad current, and waves pummeling the boat. Tomorrow they will race Maritime Rowing Club from New Canaan, Connecticut in the Fawley Challenge Cup Event.

Malvern Quad Wins at the Reading Town Regatta

The first Malvern Quad, composed of Carter Lindborg, Matt McManus, Mike Rawlings and Robin Prendes from Miami Rowing Club, won the Senior 2 Quad Event against Sydney Rowing Club from Australia at the Reading Town Regatta on Saturday. They beat Newport Aquatic Center from the USA in their heat and beat the Sydney A boat by a boat length and a half. The second Malvern Quad, which included Matt Benedetto, Sean Stewart, Mark Borgerson, and Mike Bohs, lost to another boat from Sydney Rowing Club by one boat length in the Junior Quad Event. The composite quad composed of Brandon Hanna and Randy Scott from Malvern and two rowers from Green Lake High School in Seattle lost to Carlow Rowing Club from Ireland in the Junior Quad Event. “The boys rowed very well today, which was quite a challenge considering the awful flooding conditions,” said head coach Craig Hoffman. “They are now gearing up for training for Henley next week, as well as doing a brush race against Carlow Rowing Club from Ireland on Monday.” Brush racing is short racing for practice and interaction between the teams.

The Draw for the Henley Royal Regatta was released, and the first Malvern Quad was seeded in the top eight selected crews in the Fawley Challenge Cup Quad Event, so they do not begin racing until Friday against the winner from the heat between Windsor Boys School and a composite boat of Marlow Rowing Club and Maidenhead Rowing Club. The second Malvern Quad, which qualified for Henley this past Friday, starts racing on Thursday against KRS Sport Gent from Belgium in their heat. Malvern coaches Brandon O’Brien and Nate O’Connor are among the seeded crews in the Championship Double Event and will start racing next Thursday against Michal Sloma and Marcin Brzezinski from Poland. Good luck to all the Malvern crews this week; it should be an incredibly competitive week of preparation and racing.

Second Malvern Quad Qualifies for Henley

Second Malvern Quad Qualifies for Henley

The second Malvern Quad, composed of Matt Benedetto, Sean Stewart, Mark Borgerson, and Mike Bohs, qualified today by being one of the top nine boats out of the 38 boats who raced in the qualifier for the Fawley Challenge Cup Event. The composite quad composed of Brandon Hanna and Randy Scott from Malvern and two rowers from Green Lake High School in Seattle did not qualify. Because of their many exceptional rowing accomplishments this year, the first Malvern Quad, composed of Carter Lindborg, Matt McManus, Mike Rawlings and Robin Prendes from Miami Rowing Club, did not need to compete in the qualifier; they will be seeded next week into a first round race. Both Malvern Quads will now be competing in the first round of racing for the highly competitive Fawley Challenge Cup Event at Henley next Thursday and Friday. “The boys rowed great today; I’m very proud of them,” said head coach Craig Hoffman. “Now they’re getting ready for the Reading Town Regatta and The Royal Henley Regatta next week”.

The Reading Town Regatta is tomorrow (Saturday, June 30^th), and is an 800 meter race. In their preliminary races, the first quad will be competing against Newport Aquatic Center from the USA, the second quad will be competing against Sydney Rowing Club from Australia and Carlow Rowing Club from Ireland, and the composite quad will be competing against another boat from Carlow Rowing Club and a boat from Windsor Boys Club from England. We wish them good luck and fair weather with their races tomorrow; it appears that there has been some pretty nasty weather in Reading for the past few days, and conditions will probably be rough again tomorrow.

Practice for Friday, March 14th has been canceled due to the inclement weather and the school's early closing. Practice will be at the Malvern Rowing Tanks tomorrow at 9:00am.
