601 Washington St. Sculling Camp - Summer 2012

This Summer, Craig Hoffman will again be running the 601 Washington Street Sculling Camp out of 601 Washington Street in Conshohocken for both new and experienced scullers. All rowers must be going into 7th grade or older. The camp is designed to teach and advance each rower's technical skills in any of the two week sessions during the months of June, July, and August:

Thanksgiving Turkey Trot Results

This past Thanksgiving morning, Malvern Rowers and alumni participated in the Annual Schuylkill Navy Turkey Trot. For Complete times and results click here.
The highlight of this year's Turkey Trot was Fred Duling, A 51 year participant in the Turkey Trot and an active member of the Boathouse Row community, competing in the Turkey Trot despite being paralyzed this past year in an unfortunate accident. Read more on this here and watch the videos below.

47th Head of the Charles Regatta Results

This past weekend Malvern competed 47th Head of the Charles Regatta. The weather was ideal and over 8000 rowers participated from all over the U.S. and around the world. Malvern Prep competed in the Club Singles (Jim McManus and Eric Kaufman) on Saturday and the Youth Doubles on Sunday (Austin Velte/Jeremy Gonzalez, Julian Venonsky/Robbie Smith, Mike Lewers/Alex
Stoczko).

On Saturday, Jim and Eric faced very tough competition and were the youngest rowers in an open age category. Jim placed 43rd and Eric place 61st out of 64 competitors. Earlier today in the Youth Doubles, Austin Velte and Jeremy Gonzalez rowed to a sixth place finish, with Mike Lewers and Alex Stoczco placing 17th and Julian Venonsky and Robbie Smith finishing 24th out of 40 crews in the race. Next Sunday Malvern looks forward to competing in the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.

Malvern quad boat beaten at Henley Regatta

Malvern Prep's quad A boat lost its bid to win the Fawley Challenge Cup at the Royal Henley Regatta in England when it was beaten Saturday in the quarterfinals by Sir William Borlase's Grammar School of England.

The Friars foursome of seniors Pat Donahue, Austin Bury, Alec Somers, and Dan Schwarz lost by a boat length to Borlase, which had tied a course record for the event the day before with a time of 6 minutes, 40 seconds. On Saturday, Borlase covered the 1-mile, 550-yard course in 6:49, 21/2 seconds ahead of Malvern.

The Friars never trailed by more than a length and drew even with Borlase with 300 meters to go, but weren't able to take the lead.

"They rowed a terrific race," Malvern coach Craig Hoffman said of his quartet. "Unfortunately, they spent so much effort trying to catch up they couldn't maintain it."

The Friars plan to watch Sunday's finals before heading home Monday.

Club from Scotland. Malvern will race Sir William Borlase School in the quarter-finals Saturday morning.
The boys raced well and comfortable in today's race. SWB is one of the best school quads in England, setting a course record this morning.

ROWING: Malvern Prep's A Quad boat won the High School Event at the Reading Town regatta in England on Saturday.

The Friars beat several Australian, English, and American Quads on the Henley-style, 850-meter course.

Malvern A and Malvern B finished first and second, respectively, in the intermediate quad final, with an Australian crew third.

Malvern B made the final after beating St. Joseph's Prep by 6 feet in the semifinal.

raced tonight with 8 boats moving forward to Henley. Malvern B will join Malvern A in a field of 24 High School and Club Quads. American Quads St. Joe Prep. All crews including Malvern A will be racing Saturday at the Reading town Regatta.
The Malvern Prep B lineup is Mike Lewers, Austin Moore, Austin Velte, and Jeremy Gonzalez.

This past weekend Malvern Rowing went to Tennessee to compete in the USRowing National Champions. Malvern won silver in the Quad event. The event had 22 Quads from every region in the country. It was a good fight with Malvern losing by 3.5 seconds to New Canaan Crew Club of CT. The competition was fierce as Malvern won the only medal from the Philadelphia area in any event.
Malvern finished 8th and 15th in the Light Double event, finished 11th in the Heavy Double event.

The team leaves for England June 18th.

Malvern Rowing Wins 3 SRA National Championships

Malvern had a great day in Camden this past weekend, winning 3 National Rowing Championships.

Malvern rowers Rob Smith and Alex Stoczko won the Junior Double.

The Varsity Light Double of Austin Velte and Jeremy Gonzalez also won a National Championship in a close race. This marks the third straight year in a row that Malvern as won the Light Double, it also marks the third straight year that the Malvern Light Double has won the so called "Triple Crown" by winning the Philadelphia City Championships, Stotesbury and Nationals.

Pat Donohue, Austin Bury, Alec Somers and Dan Schwarz won the Varsity Quad for Malvern for the 5th year in a row. This also completed the Triple Crown for the Varsity Quad.

Malvern finished 2nd in the Varsity Double by 1.5 seconds, Freshman Quad a close 3rd. Rowers, coaches, and parents were very excited about the day.

Malvern Looks forward to competing at USRowing Youth Nationals.

Stotesbury 2011 Results

This past Saturday Malvern had a successful day yesterday at the 85th Stotesbury Regatta. Malvern Won two Golds. The Sonzogni Trophy was won by Malvern's Varisty Quad of Pat Donohue, Austin Bury, Alec Somers, and Dan Schwarz . The Barker Trophy was awarded to Jeremy Gonzalez and Austin Velte for winning the Varsity ltwt double.

10 Malvern rowers qualified for USRowing Youth Nationals in Oakridge, Tennessee. In the Varsity Quad, Varsity Double, and two doubles in the Varsity Light Double. The Varsity Quad, Varsity Double, Varsity Light Double, and the Freshman quad qualified for Scholastic National Championships in Camden, NJ.

Malvern Wins Horvat Trophy and competes at Mercer Sprints Regatta

Malvern rowing had a good Friday and Saturday racing at the Mercer Sprints in NJ against the best club and scholastic teams across the Northeast USA. The Malvern rowers raced in terrible weather and water conditions Friday and Saturday, winning gold in the Novice Quad, 2nd Varsity Quad, and Varsity Quad events. The lightweight Quad event was cancelled.

The fifth Manny Flick on Sunday was cancelled because of unsafe fast water conditions.
Malvern again won the Horvat Trophy for accumulating the most sculling points of the 2011 Manny Flick series.

"This skull is no longer just a skull is it? It's a legacy," said Father James Flynn.

On a brightly lit but windswept Saturday, Brandon Bury was, for a moment, very much alive; the center of attention for all the right reasons.

"We were, uh, up in Canada, and as we were returning, I got a call from my dad. He was really upset, and I figured something bad had happened," said Austin Bury.

That call came on June 6th last year, and something bad had happened. Sgt. Bury, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, died. The 26 year old father of two was killed by an I.E.D.

"And I just broke down," said Austin. "It was a really sad day."

Austin Bury was Brandon's cousin. Geographically, they were not close. Brandon lived in Texas, but in every other way they were.

The loss hit Austin hard, derailing his season as a championship caliber rower at Malvern Prep.

It hit the team hard, too. Though they had never met him, they were inspired by Brandon's sacrifice. So they dedicated the season in his honor.

Saturday, they made certain he would be a part of their future seasons as well. Christening the Sgt. Brandon C. Bury, USMC, a varsity quad given to the team by an anonymous donor.

Brandon didn't row, but he was an avid swimmer and a fierce competitor, so this, his family says, is fitting.

Though Saturday was the official christening of the Sgt Brandon Bury, the boat has already been on the water twice, winning both times.

"More than anything, the boys really feel motivated when they get into that boat," says Rowing Coach Craig Hoffman.

The dedication gives the young athletes someone to fight for, and for Brandon Bury, the consummate the soldier, a different fight to join.

"This is just awesome," said Austin. "I can't wait to come back and watch them race, next year's varsity squad to see how they do. I'm sure they will be fast and the boat will lead down the river."

Malvern Prep Rowing Team to Christen New Boat in Honor of Fallen Soldier

The phone call came on June 6, 2010, as Austin Bury ’11 was on his way home from Canada, where he had been racing as a member of Malvern Prep Crew. The call was from his dad, Tim, who delivered the news that Austin’s cousin, 26-year-old Marine Sgt. Brandon Bury, had been killed while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. The news weighed heavy on Austin’s heart as he endured that long trip home.

Brandon Bury had already served two tours in Iraq before he was deployed to Afghanistan in April 2010. He had most recently been assigned to train Afghan police officers, and spoke to family and friends about making progress with the local population. “He had a light about him when he walked into a room, and everyone was always drawn to him," said his wife Heather, mother of Brandon’s 4- and 2-year-old sons. “He was the kind of man who wanted to help everyone.”

Rowing provided comfort for Austin, who greatly loved, admired and respected his cousin. He focused his energies on the US Rowing Youth National Championship in Cincinnati, and the US Rowing Junior Men's National Team Selection Camp, but his commitment to crew meant he was unable to join his family in attendance at both Brandon's funeral in California and memorial service in Houston. Brandon was in his thoughts last season, and this year the loved one he lost will be with him throughout the racing season.

A brand new quadruple scull, a gift of an anonymous donor, will be christened as the Sgt. Brandon C. Bury USMC at a ceremony on Saturday, April 2, at 12:00 p.m. at the team’s boathouse, located at 601 Washington Street in Conshohocken. Malvern Prep rowers, families, alumni and friends are invited to join the special event, which will include comments by Malvern’s Head of School, Father James R. Flynn, O.S.A., Brandon’s aunt Missy Whitney, and Malvern crew coach Craig Hoffman.

“The dedication of this quad has meant so much to Austin and his extended family,” said Betsy Bury, Austin’s mother. “Brandon's father, Brian, and mother, Terri, are overwhelmed with gratitude to Malvern for this honorable recognition of their son. We hope that Sgt. Brandon C. Bury USMC will see Malvern Prep all the way to Nationals this year.”

Malvern rowing had a good regatta on Sunday in Turin, Italy. Over 800 single scullers from 10 different countries raced in all age groups. Malvern rowers racing were Pat Donohue, Dan Schwarz, Austin Bury, and Austin Moore.

Malvern rowing coach Sam Cunningham finished 20th overall and 5th in the Championship lightweight division, racing many Olympians. Sam was the second highest finish of Americans racing overall. Pat Donohue finished 46th overall and tenth in the Junior A category of 50+ racers, racing against medallists from the recent Junior World Championships. The regatta was spectacular, showing the value European countries puts on learning to row singles from the age of nine. Malvern was invited to attend next year by the host regatta.

This past weekend Malvern rowing competed at The 2010 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta and had a great day. Malvern scullers finished 1st, 6th, and 10th in the high school Single event in a field of 57 competitors. Malvern also finished 1st and 2nd in the high school Quad event in a field of 32 entries, finishing one second apart. Malvern's high school double finished 9th in a field of 35 entries. These finishes are the best results Malvern Rowing has ever recorded at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.

Malvern rowing coach Sam Cunningham also had a great day and finished 1st in the Championship light single event.

Malvern's guests from Shiplake College, Henley England, won the HS Double and finished 5th in the high school eight event and had a great stay in Philadelphia.

Head of the Charles 2010 Results

This past weekend Malvern Rowing traveled up to Boston to compete at the 2010 Head of the Charles Regatta. Malvern raced three doubles with two placing in the top 10. Malvern was the only school that had two doubles place in the top 10. Dan Schwarz and Pat Donohue placed 5th in actual time however were bumped down to 8th place due to a 10 second buoy penalty. Austin Bury and Alec Somers placed 10th and Jeremy Gonzalez and Mike Lewers placed 18th in a field of 41. Malvern also raced 2 singles placing 25th and 41st.

Back in Philadelphia 3 Malvern rowers raced at the Children's Foundation Regatta on Sunday winning the novice single and placing 2nd and 3rd in the varsity single.

Fall 2010 Race Results: Row for the Cure, Navy Day and The Hutchinson Cup

The past few weekends Malvern Rowers have been busy at work on the Schuylkill competing in singles at the Hutchinson Cup Regatta, Navy Day Regatta and Row for the Cure. Malvern was very competitive in all three and had successful weekends.

This past weekend Malvern competed in Row for the cure, a charity regatta that raises funds for cancer research, Malvern is proud to support the cause. Malvern had 11 rowers compete and captured 9 out of the top 10 spots. Senior Pat Donohue placed 1st followed by Dan Schwarz and Austin Bury who placed 4th. For complete results click here.

Malvern was also very competitive in the Navy Day Regatta. Malvern entered 11 rowers and 7 of those racers placed in the top 10 with senior Pat Donohue placing 1st overall. For complete results click here.

Malvern Rowing Wins 2 SRAA National Titles

This past friday and saturday Malvern competed in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championships in Saratoga New York. Malvern had 6 boats qualify to compete and five of those boats made it to the final. The Varsity Double of Alec Somers and Austin Moore placed 4th in a very competitive final. Also placing 4th was the JV Quad of Alex Tammany, Austin Velte, and Robbie Smith and Alex Stotzko. Sophmore Julian Venonsky raced a hard fought race in the Varisty Single however he did not make the final. In a competitive final, Jeremy Gonzalez and Pat Allen placed third in the JV Double.

Malvern's two golds came from the Varisty Lightweight double and the Varsity Quad. The Varsity Lightweight Double of Bill Doughty and Dan Schwarz won their heat by 7 seconds which advanced them to the finals were they placed 1st by 9 seconds.

Malvern's Varisty Quad placed 1st in a competitive field. Mike Lewers, Austin Bury, Pat Donohue and Dave Matasic crossed the line 4 seconds ahead of 2nd place. This win marked the 4th year in a row that the Malvern Varsity Quad has won Philadelphia City Championships, Stotesbury and SRAA Nationals.

Malvern Rowing Wins Three Golds at Stotesbury Cup

Malvern Rowing competed well this past Friday and Saturday at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta. The Stotesbury Cup is the largest high-school regatta in the world with crews from all over the country and Canada participating. Malvern came home with 3 golds after many hard fought races.

Malvern's Varisty Single, freshman Trevor Pinos, fought hard but came up short in a tough qualifying heat. In addition, Malvern's Varsity 2X consisting of freshman Alex Stoczko and sophomore Julian Venonsky missed the semis by 2 seconds in a competitive event.

Malvern's JV 2X of freshman Alex Tammany and sophmore Robbie Smith, made it through the head race qualifier and the semi-final landing them in the Final.

Malvern's first win of the day came in the light-weight double event. The double consisting of Dan Schwarz and Bill Doughty placed first all the way through the qualifiers to the final where they finished with a time of 5:19; 5 seconds ahead of second place. For this Malvern won the Barker Trophy for the Varisty Lightweight Double.

Malvern's next gold came in the JV Quad event. Malvern's recently formed JV 4X comprised of Pat Allen, Austin Moore, Austin Velte, and Jeremy Gonzalez placed second in their time trial and 1st place in their semi-final. In a very competitive final Malvern placed 1st. This is the second year in a row that Malvern has won the George C. Hines Trophy for the JV Quad event.

The final gold medal came from Malvern's Varsity Quad of Mike Lewers, Austin Bury, Alec Somers, and Dave Matasic. The Quad came in 1st in their qualifier and semi and proceeded to the final where they had one of their toughest races of the year. The quad battled from behind to win the race by .4 seconds over second place with a time of 4:49. This win marked the fourth year in a row that Malvern has come home with the Sonzogni Trophy for the Champions of the Men's Varsity 4X.

Malvern looks forward to competing in two weeks at SRAA Nationals in Saratoga, NY.

Malvern Freshmen Win Double Event at Dr. White Regatta

Freshmen, Alex Tammany (left) and Alex Stotzko (right) won the Freshman Double last weekend at the Dr. White Regatta. Tammany and Stotzko finished 20 seconds ahead of second place. The single event in which Malvern had also entered was cancelled due to high winds.

Malvern Rowing Takes Four Golds at City Championships / Accepts Horvat Trophy

This past weekend, Malvern Rowing competed in the Philadelphia City Championships. Malvern began the day by receiving the Horvat Trophy for having the most accumulated points in the 2010 Manny Flick Series.

Three Malvern Novice Rowers competed in the Novice Single event, Trevor Pinos advanced to the final where he placed 4th. Two more Malvern Novices competed in the Freshmen Double event, the double, consisting of Alex Stoczko and Alex Tammany, took Gold in the final after a hard fought race.

Malvern's JV Rowers had a good day on the water as well. Julian

Venonsky competed in the JV Single event where he placed 4th, and the JV Double of Robbie Smith and Austin Velte missed first place by .28 seconds as they took Silver.

Malvern's varsity rowers had a fantastic day onthe race course. The Varsity Light-Weight Doubles of Bill Doughty and Dan Schwarz, and Pat Allen and Jeremy Gonzalez, took 1st and 3rd respectively. Malvern's Varsity Double of Alec Somers and Austin Moore also grabbed gold, finishing almost four seconds ahead of second. This past weekend Malvern Rowing competed in the 5th and final Manny Flick. Malvern entered the day leading the point total for the Horvat Trophy and continued to stay in the lead as well as widen the margin the victory. Robbie Smith and Austin Velte raced first and the placed 3rd in the jv double heat. From there the results continued to improve with a second place finish in the JV single by Julian Venonsky. The first win of the day came from the novice quad of Alex Tammany, Brad Hunt, Rich Jeong and Alex Stotzcko as they captured their first win of the season. All three of Malvern's doubles placed first in their heats. The ltwt. double of Jeremy Gonzalez and Pat Allen, the varsity double (first heat) of Alec Somers and Austin Moore, and the varsity double ( 2nd heat) all won 1st place. Malvern concluded a sucessful day of racing with a 1st place victory in the varsity quad. The varsity quad of Austin Bury, Mike Lewers, Pat Donohue, and Dave Matasic finished 5.8 seconds ahead of second place.

Results: 4th Manny Flick

This past weekend Malvern competed at the 4th Manny Flick. The day started off with a second place finish in the JV single by sophmore Julian Venonsky. Novice Trevor Pinos placed 7th in his first time in the single, unfortunatly the novice quad did not finish due to equipment breakage. Robbie Smith and Austin Velte placed 3rd in the jv double head race. In the Ltwt Double, Malvern placed 1st in both the first and second flight. Bill Doughty and Dan Schwarz placed 1st in the first flight and Jeremy Gonzalez and Pat Allen placed 1st in the second flight. In the varisty double, Alec Somers and Austin Moore also placed 1st. The varisty quad of Austin Bury, Mike Lewers, Pat Donohue and Dave Matasic placed first. Malvern will compete this friday and saturday in the ISA sculling championships at Mercer Lake. Malvern will also race this upcoming Sunday to compete to win the Horvat trophy, a trophy awarded to the boys sculling team who has accumulated the most points over the course of the Manny Flicks.

Today, Malvern Rowing kicked off the spring racing season by competing in the 2nd Manny Flick/Horvat Series. The first race for Malvern was the novice quad which placed 3rd and consisted of Alex Tammanay, Trevor Pinos, Rich Jeong and Alex Stotzco. The jv double of Robbie Smith and Julian Venonsky placed 4th. Malvern raced two doubles in the lightweight category. Bill Doughty and Dan Schwarz placed 1st in the event followed by Jeremy Gonzalez and Pat Allen who placed 2nd. Alec Somers and Austin Moore raced in the first heat of the varsity double where they also placed 1st. Malvern finished out the day with a 1st place victory in the Varsity Quad event which was won by Pat Donohue, Austin Bury, Mike Lewers, and Dave Matasic.

Schuylkill Navy Run 2009 Results (Turkey Trot)

Today, Malvern Rowers continued the tradition of competing in the annual Schuylkill Navy Run, commonly referred to as the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot. The challenging course consists of 5 and 5/8 miles of hilly terrain. The race starts at Malta Boat Club on Kelly Drive, winds up and down through Fairmount Park, returns by way of Brewery Hill, down Kelly Drive and back to Malta. The top finishers from Malvern were Jeremy Gonzalez who placed 21st out of 241, Bill Doughty who placed 38th/241 and Dan Schwarz who placed 42/241.

Malvern Rowers Prepare Rowing Tanks for Indoor Season

With the Fall season behind them, Malvern rowers all pitched in to help prepare the Melton Rowing Center for the upcoming indoor season. After a few hours of mopping, wiping, spraying and a little elbow grease, the Melton Rowing Center was as good as new and is now ready to host winter training.

This past weeked Malvern Rowing had a busy and sucessful weekend. Malvern Rowers competed in the Navy Day Regatta, Schuylerskiff Regatta and Row for the Cure. Results were as follows:

Malvern entered 14 singles and captured the top 9 spots in a field of 25 entered at Navy Day. Pat Donohue placed 1st followed by David Matasic, Dan Schwarz, Bill Doughty and Alec Somers. For complete Navy Day results click here.

Three Malvern single scullers, Pat Donohue, Austin Bury, and Dave Matasic also traveled to Saratoga, NY on Sunday to compete in the Schuylerskiff Regatta. Pat Donohue won the Junior 17/18 year old race and Austin Bury placed 3rd in the 15/16 race. For complete Schuylerskiff results click here.

Malvern Wins 2 SRA National Titles

This past friday and saturday, Malvern Rowing won 2 SRA National Titles at Mercer Lake, NJ. With the sun out and a cross/head wind, all malvern rowers were competitive in the Junior Double, Junior Quad, Ltwt Double, and Varisty Quad events.

In the Junior Double, Andrew Paisley along with freshman Mike Lewers, placed 2nd in the friday qualifier which advanced them to the saturday final were they placed 5th overall.

In the Junior Quad, Alec Somers, Jack Buckley, Austin Moore and Dan Schwarz placed 1st first in their qualifier on friday which advanced them to the finals. In the finals, despite only rowing together as a boat for a very short period of time, they were able to finish with an impressive 2nd place. Their time of 05:14.560 was only 2 seconds behind 1st place.

The 1st of Malvern's 2 SRA National Titles came from Dave Matasic and Bill Doughty in the Men's Ltwt. Double. Dave and Bill placed 1st in their qualifier and repeated their 1st place row on saturday, capturing an SRA National Title. Their time was 05:48.234.

The second title came from the 1st place finish of Mike Donohue, Pat Donohue, Austin Bury and Chris Higgins in the Men's Varisty Quad. After having to restart the race due to a collision, Malvern battled through tough competition and a head wind to finish with open water and an SRA National Title. The win completed Malvern's third consecutive year of winning Cities, Stotesbury and Scholastic Nationals in the Varsity Quad. Their time was 05:10.239.

Malvern looks forward to competing at USRowing Youth Nationals for schools and clubs in Cincinatti, Ohio on June 12th-14th.

The 83rd Annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta Results

This past friday and saturday, Malvern was very competitive at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, the largest highschool regatta in the world.

In the doubles: Sophmores Alec Somers and Austin Moore placed 6th in their their time trial for the JV double, 3rd in their semi-final and advanced to the finals were they placed 6th. Junior Andrew Paisley and novice Nic Kilmer placed 13th in their time trial of the Men's Varsity Double on friday so were unable to advance. Giving them varisty racing experience for next year, novices Pat Allen and Mike Mancenelli raced in the Mens's Lightweight Double. Pat and Mike were competitive and made it past the time trials and placed 6th in their semi-final. Senior Sean Lawler raced in the Men's Varsity Single. Sean qulaified for the semi - final were he placed 3rd, one place short of advancing to the final.

Malvern had a very sucessfull day in all of their quad events, winning all three. Saturday started off with a solid win from freshmen Mike Lewers, Jeremy Gonzalez, Chris Smart and Austin Velte. After placing 2nd in their time trials to Montclair, the Freshmen Quad won their final. They won the first ever Freshmen Quad event at Stotesbury and in doing so claimed the Jack and Nancy Seitz Trophy.
In the Boy's Junior Quad, Dave Matasic, Jack Buckley, Dan Schwarz, and Bill Doughty placed 1st in the time trial and the semi-final to advance them to the finals. In the finals with a slight headwind Dave, Jack, Dan and Bill rowed a solid race to come in 1st place, 3 seconds ahead of second place. The Junior Quad was awarded the George C. Hines Trophy for their 1st place finish.
Defending Stotesbury champions, Malvern's Varisty Senior Quad finished the day strong for Malvern Rowing. The Varisty quad was quoted by head coach Craig Hoffman as “a young boat that has had to work extremely hard.” and that is what they did. After placing 1st in their time trial, seniors Mike Donohue and Chris Higgins along with sophmores Austin Bury and Pat Donohue all rowed well in a hard fought race, beating schools such as Roman Catholic Highschool and The Haverford School. Malvern was awarded the Sonzogni Trophy for the Varisty Quad's 1st place finish for the 3rd consecutive year.

Malvern looks foward to competing next weekend in SRA's at Mercer Lake Nj. As quoted on row2k, Head Coach Craig Hoffman stated "The other teams are really terrific boats, and we're very fortunate to win today. We have no illusions that it isn't going to get tougher over the next few weeks at SRA's and Cincinnati."

Philadelphia City Championships Results

Malvern raced well this past Sunday at The Philadelphia City Championships on the Schuylkill River. Malvern claimed 2 City Championships in varsity events, as well as various placings by the Junior Varsity as well as Malvern's novices. Malvern's Varsity Quad of Mike Donohue, Pat Donohue, Austin Bury, and Chris Higgins, rowed a hard fought race to place 1st. Mike, Pat, Austin and Chris rowed a time of 4:35.85, 2.04 seconds ahead of 2nd. David Matsic and Bill Doughty also won a City Championship. Dave and Bill raced a time of 5:10.12, placing them 1st in the Boy's Lwt. Double.

In the Junior Varsity events, Malvern placed 2nd and 3rd. Alec Somers and Austin Moore placed 3rd with a time of 5:13.77 in the JV Double. Andrew Paisley placed 2nd in the boy's JV single with a time of 5:50.18.

Malvern's Freshman Quad placed 1st with a time 5:11.74. Malvern's Novice Quad placed 2nd with a time of 5:23.10. Malvern also placed 3rd in the Boy's Novice Double with a time of 6:03.80

This past Sunday, Malvern raced in the 5th Manny Flick. The day started out with a 2nd place finish from Andrew Paisley in the Men's JV Single event with a time of 5:48.98. Also Placing 2nd was Austin Moore and Alec Somers with a time of 5:15.93 in the Men's JV Double event. In the Novice quad, Malvern placed 1st and 3rd with times of 5:11.31 ( A Quad) and 5:12.50 ( B Quad). Malvern placed 4th and 5th in the novice single with Robbie Smith coming in 4th with 6:28.83 and Julian Venonsky coming in 5th with 6.33.74.

In the Men's Varsity Single, Sean Lawler placed 3rd with 5:41.02. In the Varsity Double Event Malvern placed 1st in 2 separate heats. Jack Buckley and Dan Schwarz placed 1st with 5:28.07, David Matasic and Bill Doughty placed 1st with a time of 5:04.47. In a close race, Malvern placed 2nd in the Men's Varsity Quad. Mike Donohue, Pat Donohue, Austin Bury, and Chris Higgins rowed a time of 4:34.53, finishing .8 seconds behind Roman Catholic.

Malvern will race next weekend at Cooper River.

Schuylkill Navy Run Results

On Thursday 14 Malvern rowers raced in the 5 5/8 mile Schuylkill Navy Run, also known as the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot. Malvern freshman rower Jeremy Gonzalez was the first High School runner across the line. Jeremy Gonzalez, Dan Schwarz, Dave Matasic, Bill Doughty, Jack Buckley and coach Brandon O'Brien ran under 40 minutes. This past Saturday and Sunday Malvern Rowing went up to Boston to race in the Head Of The Charles Regatta. In Sunday's Club Mens Single Chris Higgins placed 16th with a time of 20:00.876, Bill Doughty placed 36th with 20:57.868, Kevin Quinn placed 41st with 21:24.158, Sean Lawler placed 42nd with 21:24.219 and Pat Donohue rowed a time of 20:53.773 plus 1 minute in penalties which placed him 50th.

In the Youth Doubles Men event Dave Matasic and Mike Donohue placed 4th with a time of 18:15.160. Austin Bury and Alec Somers placed 22nd with a time of 20:05.528. Jack Buckley and Dan Schwarz rowed a time of 20:07.742 but placed 35th due to penalties.

Navy Day Results

Today Malvern Rowing competed in the 23rd Philadelphia Navy Day regatta, claiming 7 0f the top 8 places in the 4k race. Mike Donohue lead Malvern with a time of 16:42.70 followed by Chris Higgins with 17:01.70 for 2nd and Dave Matasic with 17:20.10 for 3rd. Bill Doughty placed 5th with 17:32.00 followed by Kevin Quinn with 17:48.40 for 6th, Pat Dononhue with 17:49.50 for 7th and Jack Buckley for for 8th with 18:11.10.

Austin Moore placed 12th with a time of 18:35.00, Alec Somers with 18:36.00 for 13th and Cameron Fuller with 19:32.30 for 17th.

Malvern Raced 2 doubles which came in 4th and 5th. Sean Lawler and Austin Bury placed 4th with a time of 17:03.00. Dan Schwarz and Andrew Paisley placed 5th with a 17:06.70.

Malvern also raced in The Men's Open unlimited Octuple placing 1st with a time of 15:40.30.

Malvern wins USRowing Club Nationals in the Junior Quad

Malvern became USRowing Club National Champions in the Junior Men's Quad event this past Saturday. The Malvern boat finished one second behind Mexico. Mexico was not eligible to win a USRowing Club National Championship. The event featured more than 30 Quads from schools and clubs. The Malvern boat of Mike Donohue, Mike Rawlings, Matt Benedetto, and Sean Stewart are currently in Oklahoma City and will be racing at CanAmMex Regatta on Friday and Saturday.

Malvern lost this evening in the semi-finals to Pertersborough. Malvern rowed great, losing to a stronger crew in bad conditions. The Quad will fly home monday, they represented Malvern well against crews from around the world.

Henley Update

Malvern began friday morning at Henley. Malvern won in the 2nd round against The Grange School of England. The margin was 4 lengths+. Malvern raced Saturday morning against The Cathedral School from Australia in the Quarter- Finals. Malvern won in the quarter- finals. Malvern trailed by two lengths early on but rowed back and won in an eight minute race. Malvern races against Leander and Sir Borglase in the semis tonight. The Leander crew is ranked as the top British junior Quad. The conditions are very windy with a strong headwind, the sun is out at the moment .

The Varsity Quad is now in England. The Quad begins racing on Friday July 4th in the 2nd round against the winner of Grange School and York. The weather is warm and sunny.

Malvern's Varsity Quad Wins National Championship

This past weekend Malvern Rowing competed in the USRowing Youth National Championships on Harsha Lake at East Fork State Park in Batavia, Ohio. In the men’s quad Malvern once again captured the gold medal after losing last year to Maritime Rowing Club. Malvern's Quad consisting of Junior Mike Donohue and Seniors Mike Rawlings, Mike Bohs and Brandon Hanna clocked a time of 6:13.30 to finish 5.75 seconds ahead of Lake Stevens Rowing Club. Lake Stevens finished with a time of 6:19.05, followed by Maritime Rowing Club with 6:19.10. The Quad completed an undefeated season winning every Championship entered. No Quad has ever won all four major Championships (Cities, Stotesbury, Schoolboy Nationals and Youth Nationals) in the same year. The Quad will leave for England June 26th to compete in the Henley Royal Regatta which will take place the 2nd to the 6th of July.

Malvern's Varsity Light Double of Matt Bennedetto and Sean Stewart won the Petite final finishing 7th overall. Dave Matasic and Bill Doughty placed 6th in the same final placing 12th. Malvern's Varsity Single Randy Scott won the C final finishing 13th.

Results from Schoolboy Nationals at Oak Ridge Tennessee

Malvern had a good day on Saturday in Oakridge, Tennessee were they competed at Schoolboy Nationals. Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart won Silver in the Varsity Light Double with a time of 05:21.77. Dave Matasic, Bill Doughty, Sean Lawler and Chris Higgins won Bronze in the Boys Junior Quad with a time of 05:02.37. Randy Scott placed 4th in the Varsity Single with a time of 05:27.4067.

Mike Donohue, Mike Rawlings, Mike Bohs and Brandon Hanna won Gold in the Men's Varisty Quad rowing a time of 04:17.52. This win by the Varsity Quad completed a sweep of the three major championships, Cities, Stotesbury, and Schoolboy Nationals for the second year in a row.

The Malvern Varsity Quad along with two Malvern Varsity Light Doubles and Varsity Single will race in Cincinnati at the USRowing Junior National Rowing Championship June 13th.

Stotesbury 2008 Results

This weekend (May 16 & 17 2008) Malvern Rowing competed in the 82nd Annual Stotesbury Cup Reggatta. Malvern's results can be found below.

Friday - Time trials

Friday morning started off with the Boys JV Double. Bill Doughty and Dave Matasic placed 2nd in their time trial with a time of 5:22.55. Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart placed 1st in the Boys ltwt. Double time trial with 5:08.07. First year rowers, Pat Donohue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury and Kevin Quinn competed in the Boys JV Quad event and placed 5th with 5:02.79 in their time trial . Sean Lawler and Chris Higgins placed 12th in their time trial with a time of 5:17.06. The Varsity Quad of Mike Donohue, Mike Bohs, Mike Rawlings, and Brandon Hanna placed 2nd in their head race with a time of 4:28.47. Randy Scott placed 9th in his time trial with 5:31.62.

Friday - Semis

Bill Doughty and Dave Matasic placed 1st in their Semi with a time of 5:07.09. Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart also placed 1st with a time of 5:04.84 in their Semi. The JV Quad placed 3rd in their Semi with a time of 4:51.36.

Saturday - Semis

The first Semi of the day for Malvern was the Boys Senior Double ( Sean Lawer, Chris Higgins) who placed 6th with a time of 5:20.90 and did not advance to the Final. Randy Scott placed 2nd with a time of 5:24.07 in the Boys Varisty Single.

Saturday - Finals

Facing a strong head wind and rough water, Bill Doughty and Dave Matasic placed 3rd with a time of 5:53.05 in the boys JV double. In the Boys ltwt. Double, Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart also faced tough conditions and caught a crab. Despite catching the crab, they came behind from last place to finish 3rd with a time of 5:41.25. The Boys Jv Quad (Pat Donohue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury, Kevin Quinn) placed 5th in their Final with a time of 5:22.06. Randy Scott placed 6th in the Boys Varsity Single with a time of 6:18.61. The Varsity Quad of Mike Donohue, Mike Rawlings, Mike Bohs, and Brandon Hanna placed 1st in the Boys Varsity Quad Final. This won them the Sonzogni Cup for the 2nd year in a Row with a time of 4:59.49.

City Championship 2008 Results

Today, Malvern Rowing competed in the Phildelphia City Championships. In the Novice Single, Jake McDonald placed 6th in his head race, Huxley Monaco just missed the final placing 7th. In the final Jake placed 6th with a time of 6:47.26. In the Junior Varisty Single, Andrew Paisley and Greg Hildith both just missed qualifying for the final, placing 7th (Andrew with a time of 6:18.47) and 8th (Greg with a time of 6:26.10). After placing 2nd in their head race, Sean Lawer and Chris Higgins placed 1st in their final with a time of 5:30.49. In the Novice Quad Event, the A quad qualified for the final but the B quad of Dan Schwarz, Jack Buckely, Austin Moore and Cameron Fuller just missed qualifying, placing 7th. In the final, Pat Donohue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury and Kevin Quinn placed 1st with a time of 5:11.12. In the Boys Ltwt. Double head race, both Malvern boats qualified placing 1st and 2nd. In the final, Matt Bennedetto and Sean Stewart placed first with a time of 5:06.50. Dave Matasic and Bill Doughty placed 2nd in a close race with Roman beating them by .24 seconds with a time of 5:11.88. Both Doubles qualified for the USRowing Junior Championship in Cincinnati on June 13th. Senior Randy Scott also qualified for Cincinnati placing first in the Varisty Single with a time of 5:35.26. To put the wrap on a fine day of sculling, the Varsity Quad of Mike Donohue, Mike Bohs, Mike Rawlings and Brandon Hannah placed first with a time of 4:37.04, qualifying them for the USRowing Junior Championship in Cincinnati.

Malvern Competes at Cooper Cup

On Sunday, April 27th, Malvern Rowing competed in the Cooper Cup regatta at Cooper River NJ. Novice Huxley Monaco placed first with a time of 10:12.61 in the Men's Novice single event. He was followed by a novice from Saugatuck and Jake McDonald. In the first heat of the Boy's Novice Quad, Dan Schwarz, Jack Buckley, Austin Moore and Cameron Fuller placed 1st with a time of 7:53.10. Also placing first was Pat Donohue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury and Kevin Quinn with a time of 7:39.52 in the second heat. Pat Donohue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury and Kevin Quinn also rowed in the JV Quad Event were they again placed 1st, winning by 33.12 seconds with a time of 7:45.10. In the mens JV single event, Andrew Paisley and Geg Hilditch both placed 4th in separate heats. Andrew rowed a time of 9:47.83 while Greg Rowed a time of 9:45.30. In the Varisty single event, Malvern placed 4th with a time of 8:44.67 rowed by Randy Scott Sean Lawler and Chris Higgins placed 2nd in the JV double event losing by only .25 seconds with a time of 8:21.45. With a time of 8:01.62 Bill Doughty and Dave Matasic placed 3rd in the Varsity ltwt. Double. Also coming in third was Sean Stewart and Matt Bennedetto with a time of 7:42.08 in the Varsity Double event. Finishing the day with a strong win was the Varsity Quad. Mike Donohue, Mike Bohs, Mike Rawlings and Brandon Hanna rowed a time of 6:48.60 to win the William Cooper Cup.

5th Manny Flick Results

Today, Malvern Rowing competed in the 5th Manny Flick. The day started out with a solid performance by novice Huxley Monaco who placed 2nd in the Boy's Novice Single event with a time of 6:26.61. Placing 4th and 5th in the Boy's Jv single event was Andrew Paisley (4th with 5:49.31 ) and Greg Hilditch (5th with 5:49.75). In the Boy's JV double event, Sean Lawler and Chris Higgins fell short of 1st place to Roman but placed 2nd with a time 5:11.77. The two Novice Quads who rowed in separate heats had a very sucessful day and placed 1st in both. The 1st Novice Quad consisting of Pat Donohue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury and Kevin Quinn placed 1st with a time of 4:58.61. The 2nd Novice Quad rowed by Dan Shwarz, Jack Buckley, Austin Moore and Cameron Fuller placed 1st with a time of 5:21.81. Also placing 1st in their race was David Matasic and Bill Doughty in the Boys Ltwt. Double Event with a time of 5:10.36. In the Varsity single event Randy Scott placed first with a time of 5:19.58. The Varsity Double, Matt Bennedetto and Sean Stewart won by 18.65 seconds to place 1st with a time of 5:04.72. The Varisity Quad finished the day strong with a win. Mike Donohue, Mike Bohs, Mike Rawlingsand Brandon Hanna beat Haverford by 6.21 seconds and rowed a time of 4:28.20.

Today Malvern Rowing rowed on Mercer Lake in Princeton Nj. Malvern had a successful day winning the Varsity Quad event, Varsity Single, JV double (2nd final) and Freshman Quad. Malvern came in 2nd in the Boys Varsity Double, 3rd in the Boys JV Double (3rd Final) and 2nd in the Boys Novice Quad Race.

4th Manny Flick Results

Today, Sunday April 13th, Malvern Rowing competed in the 4th Manny Flick. Despite the rough water, winds and stong currents, Malvern had a very successful day. The day started off with a 3rd place finish in the Boys Novice Double event. The event was rowed by Jake McDonald and Huxley Monaco who rowed a time of 6:41.85. Following the Novice Double was the Boys JV Single. Placing 2nd was Andrew Paisley with a time of 6:19.49 who was followed by Greg Hilditch who finished 3rd with a time of 6:20.87. Malvern placed 1st with a time of 5:33.75 in the Boys JV Double which was rowed by Sean Lawler and Chris Higgins. Also placing 1st was the Boys Varsity Lightweight double. This event was won by Dave Matasic and Bill Doughty who rowed a time of 5:26.92. Malvern again placed 1st in the Boys Varsity Single event which was rowed by Randy Scott. Randy won by 13.60 seconds with a time of 5:55.22. In an extremely close race with Roman Catholic, Matt Bennedetto and Sean Stewart placed first with a time of 5:24.95, beating Roman by .56 seconds. Also in a close race with Roman was the Boys Varsity Quad. The quad consisting of Mike Donohue, Mike Bohs, Mike Rawlings and Brandon Hanna placed first with a time of 4:50.37. Malvern finished the day strong by placing 1st and 5th in the Boys Novice Quad Head Race. The A quad consisting of Pat Donohue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury and Kevin Quinn placed first with a time of 4:55.35. Placing 5th with a time of 5:40.00 was the B quad rowed by Dan Schwarz, Jack Buckley, Austin Moore, and Cameron Fuller. Congratulations to all, and Malvern looks forward to competing in the ISA regatta at Mercer NJ on April 19th and the 5th Manny Flick on April 20th.

Malvern Competes in 3rd Manny Flick

Today, Sunday, April 06, Malvern sculled in the 3rd Manny Flick on the Schuykill River. Malvern placed 1st in seven of their races and also placed 2nd and 5th. The day started off with the Boys Novice Double, Jake McDonald and Huxley Monaco who placed 2nd with a time of 6:18.08 in their first race of the year. Following the Novice Double was the Boys JV Double event. The two doubles competing in the event were Sean Lawler and Chris Higgins (A)with a time of 5:18.43 good for 1st place and Andrew Paisley and Greg Hilditch (B) with a time of 5:34.61 which placed them 5th. The Boy's Novice Quad rowed by Dan Schwarz, Jack Buckley, Austin Moore and Cameron Fuller won with a time of 5:26.77 leaving open water between them and 2nd place who beat them in a close race at the 2nd Flick. The Boys Freshman Quad consisting of Pat Donahue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury and Kevin Quinn also won with a time of 4:23.60. In a close race with Roman, Dave Matasic and Bill Doughty won the Boy's Varsity lwt. Double event with at time of 5:08.44. The Varsity Single event was also won by Malvern. Randy Scott pulled a time of 5:26.81 winning with open water and a margin of 10.51 seconds. Also coming in first was Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart who won the Boy's Varsity Double event by 9.90 seconds with a time of 4:58.14. To put a wrap on a sucessful day the Varsity Quad rowed by Mike Donahue, Mike Rawlings, Mike Bohs and Brandon Hanna, came away with another 1st place with a time of 4:23.01. Malvern will be competing in the 4th Manny Flick on Sunday April 13th.

Malvern Competes in 2nd Manny Flick

Today, March 30th, Malvern Rowing competed in the 2nd Manny Flick on the Schuykill. The team as a whole was very sucessful placing 1st in all of the races they competed in along with a 2nd and a 3rd place. The day started out with the 2 JV doubles consisting of Greg Hilditch and Andrew Paisley(B) and Sean Lawler and Chris Higgins (A). Sean Lawler and Chris Higgins placed 1st with a time of 5:19.15 followed by Conestoga and then Andrew Paisley and Greg Hilditch with a time of 5:33.99, placing them 3rd. Finishing 2nd with a time of 5:29.08, in their first race of the year was the boy's novice quad consisting of Dan Schwarz, Jack Buckley, Austin Moore, and Cameron Fuller. Following the Boy's Nivice quad race was the Boy's Freshman quad consisting of Pat Donohue, Alec Somers, Austin Bury and Kevin Quinn. They placed 1st in their race with a time of 5:12.13. Bill Doughty and Dave Matasic placed 1st in the Boys Lwt. Double event with a time of 5:12.1. Following the lwt. double was the Boy's Varsity single event that was won by Randy Scott with a time of 5:41.87, beating 2nd place by 22.10 seconds. Race #55, Boy's Varsity Double was won by Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart with a time of 4:58.54. Finishing the day strong was the Boy's varsity quad placing 1st coming behind from 3rd place to finish with a time of 4:32.11. Malvern will be competing in the 3rd Manny Flick on Sunday April 6th.

Malvern kicks off Spring season at 1st Manny Flick

On Sunday March 16th Malvern Prep Crew kicked off the Spring Season at the First Manny Flick on the Schuylkill. The team was successful in all 4 of their races, coming in first place 4 times along with a second and a third place finish. The two Varsity quads stroked by Matt Bennedetto (A) and Mike Donahue (B) placed 1st and 2nd with times of 4:24.65 and 4:25.80. The JV double event was won by Sean Lawler and Jake Pellicano with a time of 5:22.11. They were followed by Roman Catholic and another Malvern double composed of Andrew Paisley and Greg Hilditch, who finished with a time of 5:28.93 for 3rd place. The Varsity Lwt. Double was won by David Matasic and Bill Doughty with a time of 5:14.89. The novices also were sucessful in their first race on the Schuylkill beating Roman Catholic with a time of 5:29.94. The team is looking forward to having a winning season and will compete in the 2nd Manny Flick on Sunday March 30th.
